Pundit John Giles has claimed that Erling Haaland has been better for Manchester City this season than Sergio Aguero was during his time at the club.
Having only joined the Citizens last summer, the 22-year-old has already won his first Premier League title and could still end the season with the FA Cup and Champions League trophies under his belt.
After recently picking up the Football Writers’ Association’s Footballer of the Year award, the Norwegian has found himself being compared to another one of City’s previous top strikers.
Giles says Haaland has been better than Aguero
Speaking on a recent edition of Off The Ball, Giles said this about Haaland’s efforts this season and how he compares to Aguero.
He said: “[Aguero] did his stuff as well, he was phenomenal. Not as good as our man is now, I don’t think he scored as many goals but he scored a lot when they were winning the trophies.
“But Haaland has been brilliant, I never doubted his addition to Manchester City if somebody’s scoring the amount of goals that he was, it’s just that Manchester City weren’t winning the matches at that particular time, but it wasn’t his fault.
“For somebody that was scoring the amount of goals that he was scoring all year, you couldn’t say ‘he’s not doing what he should to be doing for Manchester City’, that’s exactly what he was brought to do and it’s proven to been the case as the season went along.”
During his time with the Manchester club, Aguero found the net 260 times in 390 appearances across all competitions, winning five Premier League titles along the way.
Having appeared in 10 Premier League campaigns, the most amount of goals the Argentine scored in one term is 26, which came during the 2015/16 season.
In comparison with Haaland, the current City striker has scored 36 goals and has the possibility of adding to that total if he manages to find the net on Sunday in the Citizens’ final league game of the season against Brentford.
With that in mind, it’s easy to see why Giles has claimed that Haaland has already proved himself to be a better goalscorer for City than Aguero.
However, we feel that for this to be a fair analysis, the Norway international will have to do it on a consistent basis, season after season, like Aguero did, if he wants to be regarded in the same light as the former City star.
