John Terry has revealed which out of the two defenders he rates more highly: Vincent Kompany, during his playing days or Virgil van Dijk.

The 43-year-old ranked both Kompany and Van Dijk among the five best Premier League centre-halves in history while speaking to GOAL (via TikTok).

Nowadays, the Manchester City icon is only discussed as a manager but as a player, he was a force of nature.

John Terry shares who he believes is better: Vincent Kompany or Virgil van Dijk

Since leaving the Sky Blues in 2019, the former Belgian captain’s name often comes up in such conversations.

Winning four league titles at the Etihad Stadium during his time at the club, Kompany’s legacy is cemented as not just a club legend but an undeniable Premier League great.

But Chelsea legend John Terry believes Virgil van Dijk has the edge over the now-Burnley boss while blind ranking centre-backs to have plied their trade in England.

“Virgil van Dijk?”, he was quizzed (via GOAL on TikTok).

John Terry replied, “Number three.”

“Number four”, he replied after Vincent Kompany’s name was taken after the Liverpool skipper.

When asked about where he ranks himself, the Englishman said, “I’ve seen others do this and put themselves at number one, so I’m going to put myself up there.”

Vincent Kompany should rank higher than the Liverpool captain

Being a legendary defender himself, John Terry has the right to speak his mind and pick Virgil van Dijk as a superior centre-back to the ex-Anderlecht manager.

But in our view, Kompany has outdone the Dutchman in the Premier League.

For starters, in terms of longevity, the retired defender trumps Van Dijk, having played for City for 11 years in comparison to the latter’s five-year spell at Anfield.

Unlike the ex-Southampton defender, who was quite poor last season, Vincent Kompany did not have a single campaign in which he was not performing at the highest level.

In terms of silverware won by them at their respective sides, Kompany lifted 12 trophies in total while Van Dijk has won seven so far.

Also, Vincent Kompany is up there with the likes of Roy Keane and Steven Gerrard as arguably the best captain in Premier League history, which cannot be said for Virgil van Dijk yet.
