Josko Gvardiol has revealed that he and the whole Manchester City squad would simply love for one thing to happen next summer.

City have just finished their pre-season tour of the US.

The club played four games, and Pep Guardiola was able to get a good look at some of the young players, as well as fringe stars.

The manager feels refreshed and re-energised heading into the new campaign, which is music to all City fans’ ears.

Because they know that a big decision is looming regarding the Spaniard. His contract is up next summer, and he is expected to decide his future midway through the season.

For Gvardiol and the City players, what they want to happen is crystal clear.

Pep leaving is not something any City fan wants to consider.

He has achieved remarkable success since joining the club in the summer of 2016, and is now arguably the greatest manager of all-time.

Pep has constantly reinvented, delivered a plethora of trophies and set many records along the way.

It is likely to never be as good again at City once he has gone. And with that in mind, Gvardiol has insisted the squad really want him to extend his contract.

He said in a new interview with the Sunday Mirror (print edition, 04/08, pg. 70 and 71): “Pep is always passionate and focused. He is constantly innovating and motivating us.

“We’d all love for him to stay longer because he brings out the best in us and has built something special.

“Working under Pep is so rewarding. He constantly pushes us to reach our full potential and be perfect in every aspect of our game. His high standards and incredible attention to detail have helped me grow as a player.”

There’s a reasonable chance of Pep staying

It is obviously a worrying situation at the moment.

Pep now has just one year left on his contract, and there is a chance he could decide to move on next summer.

The 115 charges may well prevent him from extending, but it remains to be seen what happens with that particular situation.

But Pep has cut a fairly happy figure since returning for pre-season and has also suggested that he could yet extend.

He is adored at the Etihad and is backed extremely well by his superiors, with everyone on the same wavelength. And he is obviously working with an incredible squad.

Hopefully, he does pen fresh terms.
