Real Madrid megastar Jude Bellingham believes Phil Foden would “weirdly” make for quite an adept goalkeeper.
In October 2022, Pep Guardiola famously claimed that the 23-year-old could even adapt to playing as a left-back [via HaytersTV].
As far back as in 2021, Guardiola claimed that the Englishman is capable of playing in five different positions [via the club’s official website].
Jude Bellingham says Phil Foden would “weirdly” be a quality goalkeeper
As versatile as Foden is, apart from at left-back, where he was tested as a youngster, he is yet to have played in an actual defensive position consistently.
But Jude Bellingham, who has trained and played with Phil Foden for England for several years believes he would do a job in between the sticks.

“I reckon Phil [Foden] would be good in net, weirdly. Just really active, like just jump around. I reckon he’d be decent in net”, he said while speaking to England’s YouTube channel.
The Manchester City midfielder replied, “Me? Me as a good ‘keeper? I don’t know where he’s got that from, [I’ll] probably get chipped all the time.”
“Yeah, I’ve never played in goal, never wanted to so I’m not sure what Jude [Bellingham] is talking about there.”
It would be a shame to see Phil Foden in goal
As exceptionally intelligent a player as Phil Foden is, he would likely not make for the best goalkeeper due to his height and lack of experience in the position, despite the claim from Jude Bellingham.
However, it is worth stating that even if Foden turned out to be a revelation in net, football fans across the world would likely be gutted not to see a majestic player like him largely uninvolved in the game.
The Stockport-born attacker is the kind of player that fans are waiting to see get the ball at their feet and weave their magic on the pitch.
Aesthetically, Phil Foden has always been one of the best players in the business during an era where often, physicality and systems take precedence over pure technicians.
However, Foden is a reminder of the days when technique and individual brilliance reigned above everything else in the game.
As a result, many might be against Bellingham’s suggestion after all.
