Kalvin Phillips says one manager ‘influenced’ him to stay in England before West Ham loan – not Pep Guardiola

Kalvin Phillips has revealed that Gareth Southgate “influenced” him to stay in England as he was looking to go out on loan in January.

Eventually, the 28-year-old decided West Ham United was the perfect destination for him to leave Manchester City temporarily, despite his tough start to life at the London Stadium.

Kalvin Phillips has started in one out of three Premier League games for the Hammers so far while making mistakes that have led to goals against AFC Bournemouth and Manchester United.

However, the Englishman’s arrival in East London has been met with excitement, with Danny Ings recently praising his experience, personality and ability in possession.

Before the move was even made official, Michail Antonio expressed his excitement at the Manchester City loanee making his move to the Irons.

Now, Kalvin Phillips has revealed that while Gareth Southgate did not instruct him to stay in the Premier League, his advice led to him eventually going on loan to West Ham last month.

“So, I spoke to Gareth [Southgate] probably about a month before the January transfer window opened. I just said what teams were interested in me at that time, that I knew about. I didn’t know about West Ham, to be honest. I knew that West Ham would probably come in a bit later in the window. I spoke to him about a few teams”, he told The Mirror.

“I mentioned Juventus and I mentioned Newcastle, which could have been a possibility and he basically told me that he’s not going to tell me what to do but he said he thinks the Premier League is a lot more difficult, a more competitive league.”

“He said to be playing in the Premier League versus playing anywhere else… it’s just that little bit of a step down in quality. So yeah, he influenced me to stay in England. And West Ham came in and I thought it was the right place to go.”

The Manchester City loanee made the right choice for the sake of his Euro 2024 berth

With Juventus currently in the title race with Inter Milan in Serie A, perhaps many would have suggested Kalvin Phillips to join the Italian giants instead of listening to Gareth Southgate.

But with Euro 2024 set to kickstart later this year and considering Phillips has rarely featured for City since 2022, to have gone against Southgate’s advice and left England may well have impacted whether he made the cut as part of the Three Lions’ squad.

However, Kalvin Phillips eventually decided to join West Ham on loan and with Gareth Southgate known to be present at various stadiums in England to watch players in action, he could impress the manager one of these days and strengthen his case to be on the flight for the Euros.
