Kyle Walker has moved to praise a ‘genius’ who makes things so much easier on the pitch for Manchester City.
Manchester City’s unbeaten run stretched to 21 games on Sunday but it was tested like never before against Liverpool.
Pep Guardiola’s side actually took the lead in the blockbuster Premier League title clash when John Stones converted a smartly worked Kevin De Bruyne corner.
But Jurgen Klopp’s men fought back with a vengeance after the break and soon got level through Alexis Mac Allister’s penalty.
City were forced to hang on as Liverpool penned them in their own box but City had chances to win, too, with Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku hitting the woodwork.
But it ended all square and the title race has now been blown wide open, with just one point separating three teams with 10 games remaining.
After the match, Kyle Walker moved to praise Guardiola.
Pep Guardiola is a ‘genius’
Speaking to City’s in-house media, Walker said: “What he’s done and the clubs he’s managed and the players he’s been able to coach… he’s nothing short of being a genius.
“That’s ultimately down to the work ethic he puts into the matches, the training sessions and the detail – we just have to execute the plan.”
City will need that genius now
Perhaps more than ever, City are going to need Guardiola’s genius if they are to win the Premier League title from here.
A draw at Anfield, where City have a terrible record, is by no means a bad result.
But, the Blues did have the lead and were in a commanding position so may feel regret regardless. City could have moved two points clear at the top but instead are a point behind Liverpool and Arsenal.
City also lost Ederson to injury, which could prove very costly as the Brazilian is expected to miss the match with Arsenal after the international break.
Stefan Ortega is a capable stand-in but losing your first-choice goalkeeper, especially ahead of such an important game, is never good.
With Jack Grealish out, too, City are without two crucial players at the worst time. Now Guardiola really needs to work his magic.
