Manchester City and Liverpool have been the two standout giants of English football so far this decade.
The Citizens had won the last four Premier League titles in a row before the Reds were confirmed as champions on Sunday – meaning Manchester City miss out for the first time since 2020, when Liverpool were once again the side who pipped Pep Guardiola to the league.
However, Manchester City are expected to bounce back next season, spending around £180m in the winter transfer window to freshen up the squad, with more significant investment likely this summer.

Florian Wirtz is the primary target for Manchester City – a meeting has already been held with Bayer Leverkusen – while Andrea Cambiaso remains on the list after January interest.
Now – however – Liverpool could use their status as Premier League champions to pinch the Italian from under the nose of Manchester City.
Liverpool could sign Andrea Cambiaso
Calciomercato in Italy have now told Manchester City to “watch out” for Liverpool this summer, as Arne Slot could sign the Juventus No.27 to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is heading to Real Madrid.
The Italian news outlet relay comments from Giovanni Bia – the agent of Cambiaso – who confirmed to Radio Kiss Kiss that Manchester City are interested in his client, saying: “Guardiola wanted him, Juventus will explain what happened, I tell you that everything that has been written in relation to the deal is true.”
Calciomercato reiterate that Guardiola remains keen, and a deal can be done should a bid of €45m (£38m) arrive for the full-back this summer.

However, Liverpool are now being mentioned as a potential destination, and a move would make sense seeing as Slot not only needs to replace Alexander-Arnold, but also wants a new option at left-back to replace Kostas Tsimikas.
Cambiaso – who has struggled since missing out on a move to Manchester City in January – can play on either the left or right, so interest from Liverpool certainly makes sense.
Juventus ready to sell
Calciomercato interestingly add that Juventus are already making moves to sign a replacement for the 25-year-old.
It is said that Cristiano Giuntoli – Director of Football at the Allianz Stadium – has enquired to Club Brugge about Maxime De Cuyper in recent days, with Juventus viewing the versatile Belgian as a perfect replacement for Cambiaso.
Should progress be made on that deal, we would expect Cambiaso to be sold relatively soon.
