Liverpool and Manchester City have been battling for players throughout the summer of 2025.
Heading into the current transfer window, Florian Wirtz was Pep Guardiola’s top target, but the German star opted to join Liverpool after the Reds became involved in the race.
Man City also challenged Liverpool for Milos Kerkez, but once again, the Hungarian made the switch to Anfield. A similar situation also played out with Jeremie Frimpong.
The two Premier League giants were also keen on a 17-year-old talent making a name for himself in League Two; however, the Merseyside club have now pulled out of the race.

Liverpool walk away from Will Wright deal
It was reported at the start of this month that Man City were ready to hijack Liverpool’s move for Salford City star Will Wright, with the Reds said to be very keen on the striker, having already made an offer for the youngster.
This situation has now changed as the Liverpool Echo’s Theo Squires is reporting that Liverpool have ended their interest in Wright. The Reds were in talks with Salford City over a possible deal for the striker, but have now decided to walk away from negotiations.
This is very likely a result of Arsenal becoming involved in the race for Wright, which was reported on Wednesday, as the Gunners checked up on the English talent last week.
The signing of the Salford star could be a big coup for whichever club secures his signature, as the 17-year-old scored 50 goals at all levels last season and has so far netted three times for the first team in pre-season.
It remains to be seen if Man City up their interest in Wright following Liverpool’s decision, but that may be pointless, as all signs are pointing towards the youngster moving to Arsenal over a switch to the Etihad Stadium.
Arsenal are now the frontrunners for Will Wright
Arsenal’s entry into the race for Wright seemingly ruined Liverpool’s plans to sign the 17-year-old, as the North London club are willing to pay a higher fee to get the deal over the line.
Ben Jacobs has reported that the Gunners are now the frontrunners for the English striker after submitting a bigger proposal to Salford City than what was put forward by Liverpool.
The Reds were unwilling to match that offer, hence why the Merseyside club walked away from negotiations.
It remains to be seen what Man City’s current stance on Wright is, but if the 17-year-old is to play in sky blue next season, the Manchester club will have to make their move fast.
