Manchester City won their second Champions League group stage match last night, beating RB Leipzig 3-1.

Pep Guardiola’s side continued their perfect start as defending champions, but had a brief scare in Germany.

Phil Foden put City 1-0 up in the first-half after great work from Bernardo Silva and the outstanding Rico Lewis.

But Leipzig hit back instantly after the break through Lois Openda.

City then struggled a little to break Leipzig down, with Erling Haaland again being a little wasteful in front of goal.

But the game changed with the introduction of Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku.

Alvarez put City back in front with a sublime finish into the top corner.

The Argentina international then slipped Doku in who put the game to bed at the end.

And after the game, Alvarez was praised by Foden…

The England international said of Alvarez’s goal on TNT Sports: “Magical. Juli’s been top this season. He’s scoring a lot of goals and he’s someone we look up to now to score the big goals. I’m happy for him because he came on and changed the game. He’s a really important player for us.”

Alvarez will surely have done his starting prospects against Arsenal at the weekend the world of good.

Alvarez is potentially City’s player of the season so far

Quite possibly, Alvarez is City’s player of the season so far. Rodri has also been magnificent.

But it is remarkable the way he has stepped up in the absence of Kevin De Bruyne.

Some were a bit worried when news dropped about the Belgian’s injury lay-off.

But so far he actually hasn’t been missed all too much, and Alvarez is a huge reason for that.

The South American just looks like he is going to influence a game whenever he gets the ball right now, and City fans are absolutely loving it.
