Manchester City are reportedly set to move forward with their transfer pursuit of Josko Gvardiol after pulling out of the race to sign Declan Rice.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the Citizens had agreed personal terms with the RB Leipzig defender, who the German club want at least €100m (£86m) for.

Now after pulling out of the race to sign Rice, having seen a £90m bid rejected by West Ham United, a fresh update has emerged on the Manchester club’s plans in the transfer market moving forward.

According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, City are “taking stock of their options ahead of the new season but are pressing ahead” with a move for Gvardiol.

After emerging from their youth system, the 21-year-old made 52 senior appearances for Dinamo Zagreb before joining Leipzig in the 2021 summer transfer window.

Since then, the Croatian has featured in 87 matches for his current side across all competitions, 41 of which came last season.

The centre-back was also given a clear look at what Pep Guardiola’s side are about as he faced off against them twice in the Champions League knockout stage.

Having scored the equaliser in the first leg match that ended with a 1-1 draw in Germany, Gvardiol and the rest of his Leipzig teammates had a night to forget at the Etihad in the second leg where they were beaten 7-0.

With the club then going on to win the treble, this would surely make a move to Manchester to play under Guardiola an exciting prospect for the defender.

Moving forward, with Rice now out of the way, the club can now fully focus on negotiating a deal with Leipzig that will hopefully see City strengthen their defence with the arrival of Gvardiol.
