It has now been revealed that Manchester City are set to earn a significant fee despite selling one of their players two years ago.
Pep Guardiola’s men are some of the savviest operators in the transfer market — often inserting buy-back and sell-on clauses in various deals.
For example, when City sold Liam Delap to Ipswich Town, they inserted a 20% sell-on clause in the deal, as per Fabrizio Romano.
Ultimately, the Sky Blues, like any club would like to remain as profitable as possible while making sales.
Sales play a huge club in helping clubs reinvest the amount into their own investment into signings — whether that is through sell-on clauses or the fee itself.

Why Man City will earn £2.5 million from Arijanet Muric joining Ipswich Town from Burnley
Amongst the players Manchester City have sold in recent years, one of them whose exit perhaps did not make huge headlines was Arijanet Muric to Burnley in 2022.
The Kosovan goalkeeper, who joined City’s youth team as a teenager made a few appearances on the bench for the club — while notably starting against Oxford United in the Third Round of the Carabao Cup in 2018.
The 25-year-old was also loaned out to clubs like Girona, Willem II and Adana Demirspor before being sold to Vincent Kompany’s Burnley, where he was their number one in their Championship-winning season in 2023.
On Wednesday, Ipswich Town officially announced on their website that they have signed the Schlieren-born goalkeeper. As per The Athletic, Kieran McKenna’s side have signed the former City shotstopper for an initial £8 million fee, which could rise up to £10 million with add-ons.
However, journalist Mike Minay revealed on X that due to a sell-on clause being in place when they sold Muric to Burnley, he has been informed that Manchester City are “set to make” £2.5 million from his transfer to Ipswich Town.
The Sky Blues will be happy to bank such a fee for a player who made just one start for them during his time at the club.
