Man City could be facing another Arteta situation amid Enzo Maresca interest

Manchester City could be facing another Mikel Arteta situation as current coach, Enzo Maresca, has been linked with a move away from the club.

Back in December 2019, the Manchester club saw Arteta leave his role as part of Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff to become Arsenal’s manager.

Since then, the Spaniard has taken charge of 179 games with the north London club across all competitions, winning 105 of them.

Now though, history could be set to repeat itself, as another one of City’s coaches have been linked with a top job at another English club.

Maresca linked with Leicester job

According to a recent report from The Telegraph, Maresca has emerged as a potential target to replace Dean Smith as Leicester City’s manager should the Englishman leave his current position at the King Power Stadium.

The report also adds that Southampton, who Leicester will be facing off against in the Championship next season, were interested in appointing the City coach as their manager earlier in the most recent campaign but were unsuccessful.

Even though the Foxes couldn’t manage to keep their place in the Premier League for next season, the fact that the club are apparently looking to appoint a new permanent manager says to us that they are looking to get back to start a new period and get themselves back to the top flight as soon as possible.

After winning 19 of the 28 games he had in charge of City’s U23 side between August 2020 and May 2021, the Italian had a short spell in charge of Parma where he won just four of the 14 games he overlooked there.

Since July 2022, the 43-year-old has been a part of Guardiola’s senior coaching staff, who have seen Arteta and Juanma Lillo leave in the past few years.

Should Maresca fancy another crack at managing a club as their main man, the opportunity to take Leicester out of the Championship and back to the Premier League could be a tempting prospect for the coach.

In fact, with Vincent Kompany recently doing the same thing with Burnley, having had experience of what it’s like to be managed by Guardiola, it would be safe to assume that Maresca has the potential to do what the Belgian has done.
