Manchester City have shown in the past that they are not against selling some of their big-name players.
For example, City have cashed in on the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Aymeric Laporte, Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane in recent years.
In this current summer transfer window, the Manchester club have secured deals to see the likes of Liam Delap, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Sergio Gomez wave goodbye to the Etihad Stadium and join new sides.
Now though, another player from Pep Guardiola’s ranks has recently been linked with a big-money move away from the club, although this is one we think would be a bad scenario for the Premier League champions.
- Who is Julian Alvarez? The story of the striker who won it all at Man City before joining Atletico Madrid

Julian Alvarez linked with Man City exit
Recently, it was claimed by journalist Cesar Luis Merlo on his X account that Atletico Madrid are advancing to land a transfer deal for Julian Alvarez.
The journalist also claimed that negotiations are already underway and that the striker, who City would apparently want £80m to consider selling, would be willing to make the move to secure more game time.
City secured a deal worth £14m for the Argentine back in the 2022 January transfer window before he eventually made his way to the Etihad in the following summer.
With two seasons under his belt at City, Alvarez has scored 36 goals, delivered 18 assists and won many domestic and European trophies across 103 appearances in all competitions.
Selling Alvarez would be a bad idea
In our view, even if the Blues were offered £80m to sell the 24-year-old this summer, this would be a bad move for them in terms of what they’d be losing from their squad.
Specifically, not only is Alvarez capable of delivering goal contributions, but his versatility in being able to play in a range of different positions across the pitch makes him a valuable player for Guardiola.
Having made more appearances in the Premier League (36) than any other City player last season, it’s clear that he is an important player for the team.
Taking all of that into account, we feel that selling Alvarez would significantly decrease the strength and quality of City’s squad and would force the club into needing to bring in a suitable replacement.
