Manchester City are reportedly close to securing a transfer deal for Mateo Kovacic.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Manchester club had opened talks over a potential move for the Chelsea midfielder.

Now though, some fresh details have emerged regarding the situation.

City closing in on Kovacic transfer

In a recent Twitter post, journalist Graeme Bailey had this to say on the matter.

He said: “Man City closing on Mateo Kovacic deal – should be tied up next week.”

Attached to this tweet was an article Bailey wrote for 90 Min expanding on the story, which claims that Chelsea will ask City for £35m to sell Kovacic, which apparently will not be a problem for the Manchester club.

After spending a year on loan at Chelsea from Real Madrid, the west London club signed the 29-year-old on a permanent basis back in 2019 in a deal worth a reported fee of £40m.

During his time with the Stamford Bridge outfit, the Croatian has made 221 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals, delivering 15 assists and winning the Europa League and Champions League along the way.

Given the experience Kovacic has in the Premier League and the experience he has of winning in Europe, he’d surely be a useful addition to City’s ranks.

Even though the summer transfer window hasn’t opened for business yet, this shows how keen City are to add Kovacic to their squad, which suggests that Pep Guardiola must be a big fan of the player.

Moving forward, if the club can wrap up a deal for the Chelsea midfielder next week, this will give them the entirety of the window to then make any other changes to the squad they feel necessary.
