Man City did something no other team has in FA Cup history after beating Newcastle 2-0 on Saturday

After Manchester City beat Newcastle United 2-0 on Saturday, they etched their names into the history books of the FA Cup.

Considering it is the oldest football competition in the world, Pep Guardiola and Co. must be beaming with pride after setting a record.

City did so with ease as well, as they showed signs of returning to their brilliant best against Eddie Howe’s side.

Against Liverpool in their recent 1-1 draw at Anfield, the Sky Blues looked light years away from the team to beat in the Premier League.

However, their domineering display against the Magpies was a reminder that their opponents in the league and the Champions League this season should doubt them at their own peril.

Manchester City made FA Cup history after beating Newcastle

According to Opta Joe on X, Manchester City became the first team in history to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup for six years in a row after their latest victory against Newcastle.

Teams like Arsenal and Manchester United are renowned for being the experts in the competition, winning it 14 and 12 times respectively.

As for Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, those three have also won the tournament eight times, one more than City.

Yet, the Sky Blues have showcased a level of consistency none of those English giants have by setting such a record.

A testament to how relentless Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is

As Manchester City played a near full-strength team against Newcastle, it was also a reminder that Pep Guardiola takes every competition seriously.

Some may argue that considering the quarter-final of the competition was City’s final game before the international break, it was an easy decision for Guardiola.

However, the Catalan tactician could have played a weakened side and rested several of his big-hitters like Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, Ruben Dias and Rodri to name a few.

Instead, Guardiola’s team selection emphasised the need to win such games for the purposes of momentum and to keep the hunger for winning trophies alive at all times.

Such has been the theme at the Etihad Stadium since Pep Guardiola’s arrival, which is why they have managed to make FA Cup history.
