Since his move to Arsenal, Viktor Gyokeres has often been compared to Erling Haaland.
However, while the Manchester City number nine scored a brace against Wolves, the Swedish striker had a Premier League debut to forget despite the Gunners’ 1-0 win against Manchester United.
So much so that Viktor Gyokeres was taken off by Mikel Arteta at the hour mark, with Kai Havertz taking the former Sporting CP goalscorer’s place.
As Manchester City supporters witnessed Gyokeres’ underwhelming start to life at Arsenal, they rubbished the comparisons that were made to Erling Haaland by several fans and pundits alike.
Man City fans say Erling Haaland is miles better than Viktor Gyokeres
One Manchester City fan claimed Haaland is on another level to the likes of Gyokeres and even Benjamin Sesko, writing: “I was hearing names like Sesko and Gyokeres. Know your master, there’s only one Erling Braut Haaland. Love ya, mate.”
Another City supporter poked fun at the former Coventry City marksman by simply mentioning a statistic which read: “Erling Haaland has scored more goals this season than Gyokeres has shots on target.”
A third Manchester City fan believes that Gyokeres cannot be mentioned in the same breath as Haaland, with Harry Kane being the last Premier League striker to be comparable to him: “Haaland definitely misses kane bro, he was the only [number] nine in the league that would actually push him. Now, he’s stuck with Gyokeres and Sesko.”
Another supporter claimed that aside from Hugo Ekitike, none of the Premier League’s current goalscorers can stack up to the Leeds-born frontman, including Arsenal’s brand-new number 14: “Haaland will continue to be the best number 9 in the Premier League until a truly good one comes along I also read that Gyokeres was going to score more goals than Haaland, the only one I liked in the first matchday is Ekitike. Gyokeres’ debut was disappointing.”
A fifth fan mentioned how every striker is compared to the 25-year-old unless it is time for them to actually prove their class on the pitch: “Better than Haaland until it is time to show why they are better.”
Finally, a sixth Manchester City fan believes Haaland is far superior to Gyokeres technically as well, writing: “Gyokeres [is] moving like Wout Werghorst but they say he is supposedly better technically Haaland.”
Sky Blues fans have swarmed social media to back the two-time Premier League winner.
Pep Guardiola has already settled Erling Haaland-Viktor Gyokeres debate
Much like Manchester City fans, Pep Guardiola suggested Haaland is better than Gyokeres when asked whether the latter would start for his side.
Guardiola said in November: “We have Erling Haaland, the best striker in the world.”
“Gyokeres is a very important player for them but he has been with [Ruben] Amorim for a long time, you can see the patterns, the joy.”
City fans will be hoping that Haaland can lead them to a third league title by dethroning Liverpool.
