The Blues have accepted they are likely to be without Kovacic from next season, with the maestro only having one year left on his contract.

Given Chelsea cannot offer European football next season, there is little chance of Kovacic signing a new deal.

With Chelsea under pressure to raise funds through player sales, some big names will departing Stamford Bridge this summer and Kovacic tipped to be one.

The Guardian say the player’s contract situation is not likely to change.

City were linked with a move for Kovacic earlier this year. Apparently, he would cost around £30 million in the next window. It was suggested that Kovacic’s agents even held talks with City.

Pep Guardiola could be losing Ilkay Gundogan this summer, which would be a big blow.

The German midfielder said recently that talks are ongoing over his future. It has been reported that Barcelona are keen to sign him, and they think he is a very underrated.

City appear set to miss out on Jude Bellingham, so the club now need to look at alternatives. Alex Mac Allister and Nicolo Barella are other possibilities.

Kovacic should definitely be strongly considered by City.

He might be quite a bit older than Bellingham, but City have had success signing midfield players around that kind of age in the past.

Fernandinho was signed by City when he was 28. And Gareth Barry also joined the club aged 28.

Kovacic has been in the Premier League for years now and he knows the English game. The press-resistant star would potentially be brilliant under Pep.
