David Moyes has admitted that he hopes Kalvin Phillips ends up being as much of a hit as Jesse Lingard was on loan at West Ham United.
Recently, Tony Cascarino claimed that he can foresee the Englishman being a success at the London Stadium as he is expected to start games regularly once again.
Regardless of how the £42 million (The Athletic) man fares at West Ham, it was reported on Thursday that he is expected to leave Manchester City permanently in the summer.
David Moyes admits he is hoping Kalvin Phillips to replicate Jesse Lingard at West Ham
However, it would help not just Phillips’ career but his confidence as well if he goes on to remind the world why he remains a terrific midfielder.
The 28-year-old’s brand-new teammate Michail Antonio approved of the move recently, adding to the positivity surrounding his loan move to the Hammers from Manchester City.
But David Moyes has set high expectations as he publicly admitted that he is hoping that Kalvin Phillips shines at West Ham in the same vein as Jesse Lingard did a few years ago.

“This time, a couple of years ago, we brought Jesse Lingard. Certainly different positions, different types of players but he really helped us, Jesse was incredible for us at this time. I’m hoping that Kalvin [Phillips] can have a similar impact in probably a different way but hopefully, as good an impact as what Jesse had”, he said (via West Ham’s official YouTube channel).
Kalvin Phillips has the quality to replicate the former Manchester United attacker
As David Moyes specified, Kalvin Phillips is not expected to score goals and assists at West Ham like Jesse Lingard did.
However, one could argue that Phillips has perhaps reached even higher levels than Lingard for both club and country.
But much like how Jesse Lingard’s career looked like it had hit rock bottom at Manchester United before he redeemed himself at West Ham, the Manchester City loanee has the quality to do the same.
Clearly, Moyes believes Phillips has all the talent and the experience in the world to set the world alight in claret and blue like Lingard did.
Whether the former Leeds United dynamo backs himself to replicate Jesse Lingard and become one of West Ham’s most integral players this season will be interesting to see.
