Manchester City could regret Romeo Lavia sale

The previous summer transfer window saw a significant number of players make moves in and out of Manchester City.

In terms of outgoing players, City waved goodbye to the likes of Raheem Sterling, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus.

Another player that left the club last summer to start a new chapter in the Premier League is Romeo Lavia, who, after making 59 youth appearances and featuring in two senior games, joined Southampton for an initial fee of £10.5m.

The Manchester club have a buy-back option worth £40m to bring the Belgian back to the Etihad Stadium, which can only be triggered from 2024 onwards.

Lavia has been a bright spark for Southampton

During his time with the Saints, who look likely to be relegated from the Premier League in the coming weeks, the 19-year-old has featured in 25 league games, starting 23 of them.

Despite only scoring one goal and providing just one assist, the teenager has still been able to show how impressive he is.

Specifically, in addition to having the highest passing accuracy (86%) out of any player currently in the Southampton squad, the midfielder also has the second-highest number of progressive passes (96), showing how attack-minded he is.

Then in terms of his efforts off the ball, Lavia has the second-highest total of recoveries (173) and the joint-second-highest combined total of tackles and interceptions (82) at Southampton.

The former City youngster’s endeavours at the South Coast club have caught the attention of Pep Guardiola, who had this to say on the matter back in April.

He said: “I am really impressed with what Romeo has done and is doing. We had, and we have, an incredible opinion about him. We thought to keep him, but maybe he would not (get) enough minutes like he has in Southampton.”

Having already found himself linked with a move away from St. Mary’s earlier this season, it would not be a surprise to see the midfield talent join a new club this summer should his current side find themselves getting relegated.

If that turns out to be the case, it’ll be interesting to see what Lavia’s next step could be and whether City could end up regretting getting rid of him in the first place.
