Manchester City fans all send clear message to Matheus Nunes after his winner against Aston Villa

Manchester City left it late to secure a massively important win against Aston Villa in Tuesday night’s Premier League encounter at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s charges took the lead in the seventh minute as Omar Marmoush cut the ball back – via a slight deflection – for Bernardo Silva to slam home.

However, Aston Villa equalised in controversial circumstances when Ruben Dias bundled Jacob Ramsey down in the box, which prompted a VAR check.

Referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot after seeing the replay, and Marcus Rashford slotted from 12 yards out to bring the Villans back into the game.

Luckily, Manchester City would not lose out due to the penalty decision as they went on to take the lead deep into second-half injury time.

Jeremy Doku got the better of Axel Disasi down the left and whipped the ball across the face of goal for Matheus Nunes to tap home at the back post.

Plenty of City fans took to X to send a clear message to Nunes in wake of another impressive display in the space of a few days.

Manchester City fans say sorry to Matheus Nunes

Nunes has come under criticism at times, but now a number of City fans were apologetic after previously doubting the 26-year-old.

“Matheus Nunes hated all season has just won us UCL football it’s time to apologise,” one fan wrote on X.

Another said: “Nunes I’m sorry I wasn’t familiar with your game.”

The apologies kept coming, with one fan saying: “My boy Nunes if I ever said a word of ill will against you I’m sorry.”

Another said: “I am sorry for ever doubting you Matheus Nunes.”

Another said: “Sometimes all you need to see to decide if a player has a future is passion and conviction. His performances recently are driven. He wants to perform, he wants to win.”

How Matheus Nunes performed against Aston Villa

Admittedly, Nunes did have some nervy moments in the game.

In one instance, one sloppy pass gifted Marcus Rashford the ball on the break.

However, Nunes does seem to be finding his rhythm overall at right-back and, crucially, he scored an incredibly important late winner.

City fans also praised Nunes for how he performed against Everton, showing he may well be turning a corner at the Etihad.

Considering this is set to be one of City’s worst seasons in some years, it looks as though the campaign could finish on a high note.

City are among the favourites to secure a Champions League spot – and they’re still in the picture for the FA Cup.
