Manchester City Under-21s are Premier League 2 champions for the fourth time in five years after beating Southampton 2-0 in Thursday’s playoff final.

Ben Wilkinson’s charges were head and shoulders above the rest of the competition this season, topping the table with 47 points from 20 games.

Manchester City’s Under-21s then followed that up with comeback wins against Liverpool and Arsenal in the playoffs before then beating Southampton at the Joie Stadium.

Pep Guardiola was among those who praised the Man City U21s for their superb efforts this season.

City fans sang the praises of one of their players, saying he carried the team throughout the competition and backing him for a bright future.

Divin Mubama wows Manchester City fans once again

The player in question is Divin Mubama, who topped the goal-scoring charts with 16 goals from 13 games.

Mubama opened the scoring for City on the night, drilling home off the post in the sixth minute for his fourth playoff goal.

City fans sang Mubama’s praises, with one supporter writing on X: “Divin Mubama one to promote to the first team.”

Another claimed that “Mubama is one for the future”, while another wrote that “Mubama (is) carrying this team on his back”.

The praise kept coming, with one fan saying: “Mubama has been a killer for the U21 this season, found his confidence, and has cleaned up his game.

“Got to find him a good spot on loan next season.”

Another supporter speculated that “Mubama ends up being sold for 20 million. He’s too good for academy football.”

Ashton Muir headed home from Max Alleyne’s pinpoint 30-yard delivery in the box to put City out of the Saints’ reach in the 39th minute.

Divin Mubama’s rise at Manchester City

Mubama joined City from West Ham United in the summer and has been splitting his time between the City U21s and the senior squad.

The England Under-20 international has made two senior outings to date for City, and also has one senior goal to his name.

Mubama made his Premier League debut off the bench against Ipswich Town and also played the full 90 minutes – and scored – in the FA Cup rout of Salford City.

His overall tally for the season reads 16 appearances, 17 goals and four assists – suggesting he’s ready to make a step up.

Pep Guardiola will hopefully take a closer look at Mubama this summer and then look to make a decision that will benefit player and club alike.

A loan move to a Championship or upper League One club would be a good way for him to build experience in the English game.
