Manchester City suffered major disappointment this week when they were knocked out of the Champions League at the last-16 playoff stage.
The Citizens were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid in their Champions League play-off second leg at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night, with Kylian Mbappe scoring a hat-trick.
It was Manchester City’s 13th defeat of the season in all competitions, which is now the most ever by a Pep Guardiola side in a single campaign in his managerial career.
Had City made it through to the last 16, they would’ve come up against Atletico Madrid, who have former Etihad ace Julian Alvarez in their ranks.
A number of City fans have been sharing how they feel about having missed out on the opportunity of facing their former player.

Manchester City fans call on Julian Alvarez to avenge them against Real Madrid
For the most part, City fans are relieved that they don’t have to come up against Alvarez and Atletico as they feel he would’ve destroyed their team.
“I couldn’t cope with Julian scoring a hat-trick against us,” one fan wrote on X. “That would push me to the edge.”
Another wrote: “Good chance on us hating Alvarez after the match? Good thing we ain’t seeing that.”
“Alvarez would dunked on us so hard I won’t wanna see that we dodged it thankfully,” wrote one supporter.
Some Man City fans also called on Alvarez to avenge his former side when they come up against Los Blancos.
One fan wrote “Julian Alvarez I need a favour against Madrid” and another said “Julian Alvarez we have a plan for you”.
Another wrote: “Julian Alvarez you have just one job. Please don’t fail me.”
How Julian Alvarez fared at Manchester City
Julian Alvarez joined Man City in 2022, the Citizens paying River Plate around £14million for his services.
He had a successful two-year stint at Manchester City, registering 36 goals and 17 assists, and winning six major trophies.
In his first season, Alvarez registered 17 goals and four assists in 49 appearances, his efforts helping City win a historic Treble.
Alvarez then 19 goals and 13 assists in all competitions in 2023/24 as the Citizens won their fourth Premier League title in a row.
Alvarez also won the UEFA Supercup and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2023, along with the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America for Argentina while on City’s books.
In August last year, Atletico confirmed the signing of Alvarez on a six-year deal reportedly worth up to £82million, which became a club-record departure for City.
