Joao Cancelo does not want to return to Manchester City in 2024 – and only plans to play for Barcelona.

That is according to Jose Alvarez – who shared the comments with El Chiringuito.

So, what was said about Joao Cancelo? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, it is no secret that Pep Guardiola and the Portugal international fell out at the Etihad Stadium.

According to the Guardian, the Spaniard was left shocked by Cancelo’s reaction after being dropped for Rico Lewis, and that set the wheels in motion for the 29-year-old to join Bayern Munich on loan back in January.

Despite impressing at the Allianz Arena, the Barreiro-born technician was not signed on a permanent basis by Thomas Tuchel, and eventually joined Barcelona on yet another loan deal on Friday 1st September.

Cancelo has since shone under Xavi at the Camp Nou, scoring two goals while also providing one assist in his three appearances in La Liga so far.

The £250,000-a-week man is clearly loving life in Catalonia, so much so that he doesn’t even plan to return to Manchester.

Alvarez claims that Cancelo only wants to join Barcelona on a permanent basis in 2024, and has no interest in returning to the Etihad Stadium or moving to another side.

The Spanish journalist added that Barcelona have a verbal €35m (£30m) clause to sign him permanently.

Manchester City are just fine without Joao Cancelo

It was a huge decision from Guardiola to offload Cancelo, as he was arguably one of the best full-backs in the Premier League at the time of his loan to Bayern Munich.

However, the Spaniard’s bold decision has been justified – to say the least.

Manchester City – of course – went on to win the treble last season, and have since bolstered the backline further with the addition of Josko Gvardiol.

While Cancelo is admittedly playing extremely well for Barcelona, nobody can argue that Manchester City should have kept him – especially after his fallout with Guardiola.
