Manchester City are now trying to extend the contract of Erling Haaland after his stunning debut campaign at the Etihad Stadium.

That is according to the Daily Mail.

So, what is the latest on Erling Haaland at Manchester City? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the Norway international made history in the 2022/23 campaign as he scored 52 goals in just 53 appearances across all competitions.

Haaland set a new record for most goals in a 38-game Premier League season with 36 goals, while he also finished top scorer in the UEFA Champions League with 12 goals in 11 outings as Manchester City won the treble.

Now – according to the Daily Mail – the Citizens want to reward their No.9 with a new contract, despite the fact his current terms run until June 2027.

It is said that Manchester City hope to extend Haaland’s contract by at least another year, and in the event of any agreement taking place, the Norwegian’s salary would increase beyond £400,000-a-week.

That would make the 23-year-old Manchester City’s outright highest earner.

Kevin De Bruyne currently earns the same as Haaland on £400,000-a-week.

Manchester City could still lose Haaland due to release clause

Interestingly, the Daily Mail add that a potential release clause is likely to be discussed in negotiations over a new contract with Haaland.

It is said that one exists in his current deal, which is dependent on the future of Pep Guardiola.

The Daily Mail believe Real Madrid hold a firm interest in signing Haaland, and given the fact that the Spanish giants are one of the wealthiest clubs around, any release clause is likely to tempt them.

Nevertheless, it is said that the Leeds-born striker is happy at the Etihad Stadium as things stand, so we would expect him to stay at Manchester City for the foreseeable future, at least.
