Manchester City are now keen to sign Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough.

That is according to the Evening Standard.

So, what is the situation involving Hayden Hackney and Manchester City? Let’s take a look…

Manchester City want Hayden Hackney

Well, the England U21 international has made quite the name for himself at Middlesbrough.

Hackney scored on Tuesday as Middlesbrough recorded a 1-0 win over Chelsea in the first leg of the Carabao Cup Semi-Final.

It was the latest special moment in what has been a season of many for the Middlesbrough No.7 – who Michael Carrick even made captain in the FA Cup loss to Aston Villa on Saturday.

Now – according to the Evening Standard – Manchester City are interested.

It is said that the Citizens face competition from Liverpool and Manchester United for Hackney’s signature, with Tottenham also keen to sign the 21-year-old.

However, the Evening Standard believe a summer exit is more likely for the Redcar-born maestro, with Middlesbrough only prepared to consider sensational offers this month.

Hackney has made 22 appearances in all competitions for Boro so far this season, scoring two goals while also providing one assist.

Who is Manchester City target Hayden Hackney?

Given the fact Hackney has only recently burst onto the scene, Manchester City fans might not know much about him.

If that is the case, a comparison to a better known player might help.

Interestingly, a story from The Athletic likened Hackney to his manager Carrick in terms of playing style.

The aforementioned article from the Evening Standard adds that Hackney is a “technically gifted defensive midfielder who can break the press by driving through the middle of the pitch” – in that respect, he sounds ideal for Pep Guardiola.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Txiki Begiristain could move for a new central midfielder if Kalvin Phillips joins Newcastle this month.
