Manchester City now want to wrap up new contract for player with just 17 appearances under Guardiola

Manchester City are now keen to hand Stefan Ortega a new contract to recognise his excellent performances when called upon.

That is according to The Athletic.

So, what is the situation involving Stefan Ortega at Manchester City? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the German has only made 17 appearances under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City – as he often plays second fiddle to Ederson.

However, Ortega was given the No.1 spot in last season’s FA Cup run, which ended triumphantly as Manchester City defeated Manchester United 2-1 at Wembley.

The Manchester City No.18 shone in between the sticks during that run, and also when called upon by Guardiola this term, leaving the treble winners very impressed overall.

As a result, a new deal should soon be on the table for Ortega, who sees his current terms expire in June 2025.

In his 17 appearances for Guardiola and Manchester City so far, the 30-year-old has impressively kept nine clean sheets, conceding just ten goals.

The Athletic add that Scott Carson is the only player to see his contract expire at the end of the season, but the 38-year-old is on a rolling one-year agreement anyway.

Txiki Begiristain could hardly have found a better No.2 when he moved to sign Ortega on a free transfer from Arminia Bielefeld back in July 2022.

The Hofgeismar-born glovesman has never moaned about his role as Ederson’s backup, and has always delivered when called upon to step in for the Brazil international. In fact, he often praises his fellow goalkeeper in the media.

Ortega is strong with the ball at his feet, commands his area, and still has plenty of time remaining at the highest level at 30 years of age.

Hopefully, discussions over a new contract between Ortega and Manchester City run smoothly, as it would be a real shame to lose him.
