Riyad Mahrez on Manchester City vs Liverpool
Riyad Mahrez told the club website (via City Xtra), “It’s going to be tough, like always against Liverpool – a very good side, but a good game to play in our first one back.”
“We have to be ready to play so we can show our best. Hopefully we can play a good game and progress to the next round [of the Carabao Cup].”
The Algerian also discussed City’s ambitions of winning the Carabao Cup
Pep Guardiola set a record at Manchester City of becoming the first manager to win four Carabao Cup titles in a row.
However, that incredible streak came to an end last season after City lost to West Ham United on penalties.
After beating Chelsea in the previous round, Mahrez has touched on his as well as the club’s ambitions of winning the trophy once again.
“We have won this competition three times since I signed for Man City and it is always a great feeling to win at Wembley. In two of those seasons, we also won the Premier League.”
“We were happy to beat Chelsea in the last round and we would like to continue as long as we can. It’s an important trophy to play for and we want to do well in every game and in every competition, we are in.”
While several fans tend to scoff at the Carabao Cup, Riyad Mahrez’s goal of winning the competition is an insight into how much the trophy means to players.
Ultimately, winning is a habit and cradling that first piece of silverware in one’s hands can catapult a team to go for more at the end of the season.
