Manchester City transfer target Florian Wirtz put in a great performance for Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend.

City are now in a really interesting position with just under two weeks left in the transfer window.

Kevin De Bruyne is out injured for the foreseeable future.

The Lucas Paqueta deal has fallen though, and some fans are starting to question whether City have good enough depth.

In recent times, Wirtz has become linked with City.

The attacking midfielder has really made a name for himself in recent times, and was named best young player in the 2022/23 Europa League by UEFA.

And the Germany international was in fine fettle this weekend for Leverkusen…

Leverkusen were taking on Leipzig at the BayArena, with the home side looking to start of their campaign the right way.

They got off to a good start with Jeremie Frimpong scoring on 24 minutes.

Jonathan Tah double the lead, before Leipzig’s Dani Olmo, who has also been linked with Man City in recent days, pulled one back.

Then Wirtz delighted home supporters, scoring with a sublime chip.

It’s possible he didn’t mean to loop the ball so high, but he will surely insist that that is exactly what he meant to do.

For his performance, Get Football News Germany gave him an 8/10 for his display, writing of him: “Made it three on the afternoon for Bayer Leverkusen. A superb, looping finish, over Janis Blaswich. Missed much of the campaign last season but showcased his unique skillset after returning at the start of the calendar year. Wirtz will be key for Xabi Alonso this season and it’s crucial that he stays fit.”

Wirtz looks a great young player who could become top-class at City under Pep

It is good to see Wirtz back playing and making an impact for Leverkusen.

In March 2022, the youngster suffered a real setback when he tore his ACL, causing him to miss the rest of the 2021/22 season, and most of last term too.

He’s a young player with serious potential.

Germany manager Hansi Flick has said of Wirtz previously (via Bundesliga.com): “He’s simply an outstanding technician, loves to play, is very creative, has a good shot, runs hard and is quick. He’s got a good total package.”

We shall if City decide to make a late play for him following the collapse of the Paqueta deal.
