Aside from Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne, Joao Cancelo has arguably been Manchester City’s finest performer this season so far.
However, in City’s surprise 1-0 defeat to a misfiring Liverpool side at Anfield, it was Cancelo’s howler at the back that cost the visitors a well-earned point.
The Portuguese full-back misjudged Alisson’s long ball to Mohamed Salah, as the Egyptian winger turned him inside out to score the winner past a hapless Ederson in the 76th minute.
In an otherwise excellent personal campaign for the former Juventus defender, all eyes were on him as his defensive capabilities were called into question.
However, the 28-year old has come out and spoken candidly about his high-profile error, holding his hands up after a rare moment of madness in the recent contest against the Reds.
“I can talk about this, because after my mistake against Liverpool last month- an individual mistake who gave the 3 points to Liverpool- the people supported me and I felt the love from our fans and I want to give it back to them in the future”, he said in an interview as part of the November issue of the City magazine on the club website.
In the aftermath of the clash, Cancelo was caught by cameras, as he went up to his fellow teammates and apologised after his error.
Phil Foden was seen supporting the versatile defender, who mouthed the words, “my fault” after approaching the England international.
All in all, there is no denying that Cancelo has picked up exactly where he left off from last term, as he has shone at left-back once again this season.
Manchester City fans will be delighted to hear that despite Joao Cancelo arguably being the most complete full-back in Europe, his will to improve and learn from his mistakes remains sky-high.
