Manchester City Football Club has seen many great goalscorers come and go over the years.
The current team is known for banging in the goals under the management of Pep Guardiola.
But there were some top poachers gracing Maine Road long before the likes of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus came on the scene.
Here are the top 10 goalscorers of all-time in the club’s 127-year history.
- Sergio Aguero, 2011-present – 258 goals
- Eric Brook, 1928-1940 – 177
- Tommy Johnson, 1919-1930 – 166
- Colin Bell, 1966-1979 – 153
- Joe Hayes, 1953-1965 – 152
- Billy Meredith, 1894-1905 & 1921-1924 – 151
- Francis Lee, 1967-1974 – 148
- Tommy Browell, 1913-1926 – 139
- Fred Tilson, 1928-1938 – 132
- Billy Gillespie, 1897-1905 – 132
Manchester City’s all-time leading goalscorer is Sergio Aguero, and the Argentine striker is now on borrowed time at the Etihad Stadium.
He struck the latest of his 258 goals for the club against Crystal Palace just last weekend, and only a handful of games remain now for him to add a few more to his tally before he departs after 10 brilliant years at the club.
The hype around Aguero’s move to City back in 2011 was big, but few could have imagined just how incredible a signing he’d turn out to be.
He has been absolutely instrumental in the club’s success since the takeover in 2008, and in the eyes of many, he is the greatest to ever don the sky blue shirt.
The South American surpassed Eric Brook back in 2017 when he scored in a 4-2 win over Napoli in the Champions League, and it’s likely his record – whatever it is come the end of the season – will stand for many many years.
Brook was a fine bearer of the record before Aguero blitzed past it.
The winger stood just 5ft 6ins, and often cropped up in the final third to finish off moves.
Remarkably, he scored double-figures for an incredible 11 consecutive seasons.
Colin Bell is fourth on the list with a haul of 153 goals in 501 appearances, and many City fans of a certain age will vouch for the former midfielder as being the club’s greatest-ever player.
Coming in at number five is Joe Hayes, who finished at City in 1965 with a record of 152 goals in 364 games – a truly amazing return.
It’s likely he would have been the all-time leading goalscorer ahead of Brook had it not been for a serious knee injury that ended his time with the club.
In terms of the top 10 being breached by someone in the nearish future, one perhaps looks to Raheem Sterling.
The England international is currently having a bit of a tricky time, but he’s been amazing for City and has already banged in 113 goals since his transfer from Liverpool back in 2015.
He will more than likely break into the top 10 in the next couple of seasons – if he remains at the Etihad Stadium of course.
And then there is Gabriel Jesus, who has amassed a very respectable 81 goals, and could well stake a claim to break into the top 10 later on in his career.
