Manchester City boast one of the Premier League’s all-time defensive legends in Vincent Kompany.

The Belgian icon captained Manchester City to their first Premier League title in 2011/12 before adding a further 11 trophies during his time at the club.

Vincent Kompany played at the same time as several other iconic Premier League defenders, such as John Terry, Virgil van Dijk and Rio Ferdinand.

Now, Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Matt Doherty has shared which out of the above players he would’ve liked to play alongside the most.

Matt Doherty snubs Vincent Kompany as John Terry gets top pick

Doherty is the latest guest on Sky Sports’ Sticker Book Challenge, in which guests must pick between four options and explain why.

When it came to his dream defensive partner, he had to pick between Kompany, Terry, Van Dijk and Ferdinand.

Doherty instantly omitted Ferdinand due to the fact he supported Arsenal as a youngster and Man United were their big rivals at the time.

The former Tottenham man then omitted Kompany, saying: “This is a bit of a tough one, him there, because it’s just the level of the other two.”

After narrowing his shortlist down to two, Doherty ultimately opted for Terry.

“Van Dijk is still playing and he’s just an unbelievable player, but for me it just has to be John Terry,” he said.

“Obviously because how much of a great leader he was, but his left foot and right foot passing, left foot diagonals, not even on a strong foot – other side of the pitch, I remember to this day.

“So that type of ability and and talent to do that, on top of his leadership skills and his golf game – and I’m a golfer – this guy is going in.”

What Mark Clattenburg recently said about Vincent Kompany

City have been the most dominant side in the Premier League over the past 13 or so years, winning a massive eight titles between 2012 and 2024.

But despite this, they haven’t had the reputation that other teams with long-standing success have had when it comes to giving referees a hard time.

Mark Clattenburg recently took part in a ‘Build a Player’ feature on the Daily Mail – with a refereeing slant.

And when it came the ‘easiest player to deal with’ column, Clattenburg named Kompany – and he didn’t hesitate either.

Interestingly, when it came to the master of the dark arts, Clattenburg replied: “All of the Manchester United team under Sir Alex Ferguson”.
