Mateo Kovacic is reportedly having his medical ahead of a proposed transfer move to Manchester City.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the Citizens had agreed a deal with Chelsea to sign the midfielder for an overall fee of £30m having already agreed personal terms with the player earlier in the month.
Now though, some fresh behind-the-scenes details have emerged regarding how close the deal is to becoming official.
Kovacic having City medical
In a recent Twitter post, Fabrizio Romano said this on the matter.
He said: “Mateo Kovacic is currently undergoing medical tests as new Manchester City player — first part of documents has been already signed. £25m plus £5m add-ons to Chelsea.”
The 29-year-old initially joined Chelsea on a loan deal from Real Madrid back in 2018 before completing a permanent transfer to the west London club a year later in a deal worth a reported fee of £40m.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, the Croatian made 221 appearances in total across all competitions, scoring six goals and supplying 15 assists along the way.
He also won the Champions League and the Europa League with Chelsea, as well as the UEFA Supercup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
With Ilkay Gundogan reportedly agreeing a deal to join Barcelona as a free agent, having Kovacic come in as a suitable replacement given the top-flight experience he has is a smart move from the Manchester club and potentially put to bed any concerns there may have been because of Gundogan’s probable departure.
Moving forward, assuming the midfielder successfully completes his medical, it would be safe to assume that an official announcement confirming the move will not be too far away.
