Nedum Onuoha has said that Manchester City have made a very smart signing with Mateo Kovacic.

The Manchester club signed the midfielder on a four-year deal worth £30m from Chelsea back in June following the departure of Ilkay Gundogan.

Since then, the 29-year-old has featured in all three of City’s competitive matches this season, starting two of them.

Having won his first piece of silverware last night as the Citizens beat Sevilla on penalties in the Super Cup final, one former City player has shared his thoughts on the former Chelsea star and his early weeks at the Manchester club.

Speaking in a pre-match live stream ahead of Wednesday night’s European clash in Athens on the club’s YouTube channel, Onuoha had this to say about Kovacic.

He said: “Really, really good, I think he’s adapted really well and I think there’s more to come from him.

“The fact that he can be trusted in this sort of big occasion, after being at the club for three weeks, if that, maybe four.

“I think it’s a fantastic signing but then again are we surprised? He came from Real Madrid, he’s been at Chelsea, he’s won a Champions League before. This isn’t his first Super Cup so it’s not a bad addition to add to an already great squad.”

Looking back on his latest performance for the treble winners, the Croatian completed the full 90 minutes of the game against Sevilla and had 57 touches of the ball in total.

The midfielder ended up making three key passes in the game, leaving only Rodri (5) with more, as well as successfully completing the two dribbles he attempted.

This display ultimately earned Kovacic an overall match rating of 7.7/10 from SofaScore, which is higher than the match ratings the likes of Phil Foden (7.5/10) and Erling Haaland (6.8/10) managed to earn for themselves.

Having now shown how capable he is of delivering solid performances in big occasions, this backs up why Onuoha thinks Kovacic is a top signing for City and think he can offer more for the team going forward.
