Manchester City fans were rocked this week by the announcement that Kevin De Bruyne is now officially playing his final games for the club.

Fans were left gutted as Kevin De Bruyne announced he is leaving Manchester City at the end of the season, after 10 years at the club.

At this stage, it is still unclear where De Bruyne will be playing his football next season.

De Bruyne has interest from Neom SC and others, but it may yet be weeks until he makes a decision.

It has been suggested De Bruyne would prefer a movie to the MLS than Saudi Arabia.

Wherever he decides to go next, De Bruyne will leave City as a club legend. Over the years, he’s left fans in awe with his incredible technical ability and playmaking, and made so many amazing contributions to the club’s success on the pitch.

He is without doubt one of the finest midfielders ever to grace the Premier League, and also foreign imports. He is also one of the best players, regardless of position, the English top-flight has ever seen.

So the fact that he is leaving is incredibly difficult to take for many fans.

Last night, though, Pep Guardiola made a fascinating revelation about the De Bruyne leaving situation – and it hasn’t gone done well with some.

When De Bruyne put out his statement that he would be leaving the club, many assumed that it was totally on his terms.

However, it seems there is more to the story.

It turns out this was the decision of the club, and that De Bruyne was never even offered an extension.

Guardiola said: “The decision has been made for the club, and the club is the club. Me, Txiki [Begiristain], and the club, so this is what it is. It was not easy for me to tell him it won’t continue.”

On social media, some fans expressed their shock over Guardiola’s admission.

@Priceless_MCI said: “So apparently de Bruyne didn’t want to leave but the club didn’t offer him contract, I’m gutted.”

@IIM9320 added: “Same with Aguero.”

@mrafui1000 said: “This is painful.”

@RealTalkMCFC said: “I get the decision but at the same time I think that decision should’ve been solely made by him after everything he’s done for us: he’s still a very influential player in the dressing room as well as being a role model for younger players (not to mention he’s still good).”

@StadiumThrills added: “Understandable but I still don’t like it.”

Why it’s the right time for De Bruyne to leave Man City

There were also plenty of fans suggesting the club are right not to be offering a contract extension to De Bruyne.

Ultimately, De Bruyne is no longer the player he once was. Yes, he still brings quality, but years of high-octane performances mean he is now struggling to impact games in the same way, which is totally understandable.

It wouldn’t be good to see De Bruyne become a shadow of himself, so this summer is the right time for him to move on.

It has been an incredible stint for the Belgian at City, and he is a club legend.

But the squad needs an overhaul, which will require some ruthless decisions to be made.
