Steve Nicol really wasn’t impressed by Manchester City’s performance vs Inter Milan last night.
Pep Guardiola’s side may have completed the treble on Saturday evening, but as ever, everyone’s a critic.
Indeed, instead of revelling in this incredible achievement, the ESPN pundit was overly critical of the performance on the night.
We all know that City weren’t at their brilliant best against Inter, but Nicol was very harsh with his view of the game, slamming numerous players, including Ilkay Gundogan, for the quality of their passing on the night.
Gundogan’s passing was off
Nicol gave his verdict on the £20m player’s passing.
“Some of it came down to the moment getting to the City players. I’ve never seen passing so bad as that from the centre-halves, from Gundogan, from Rodri, from Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland’s touch. The hesitant performance from some of these players was due to the magnitude of what was ahead of them,” Nicol said.
Bit of credit
We get it, Man City weren’t at their best last night, but the way some pundits are speaking about this performance would have you think they were beaten 3-0.
Yes, Inter did a good job of stifling the creators in this team, but at the same time, City had most of the possession and they were in Inter’s half for most of the game.
There’s a reason City went into this game as heavy favourites, they were the better team, and while the gulf wasn’t as big as some expected, the gulf was still there for all to see.
Rather than criticising the performance on the night, we can’t help but feel that pundits should be hailing what will go down as the greatest season in English football history from a team of wonderful players who have provided a lot of entertainment.
