Newcastle are now leading the race to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City in the January transfer window.

That is according to TEAMtalk.

So, what is the latest on Kalvin Phillips at Manchester City? Let’s take a look…

Newcastle lead race to sign Kalvin Phillips

Well – after Pep Guardiola admitted he struggles to see the England international fit into his tactical ideas – a January exit looks very likely for the £45m man.

Reports coming from Italy earlier this week claimed that Phillips had decided to join Juventus after being promised a role in the starting XI by Massimiliano Allegri.

Now – however – while interest from Juventus is mentioned, TEAMtalk believe Newcastle have a strong chance of signing the Manchester City No.4 this winter.

It is said that Phillips would ultimately prefer to remain in the Premier League if he can help it – and likes the idea of playing for Newcastle.

The 28-year-old is also said to be open minded about moving abroad to Turin if Juventus end up being the only side to make an offer.

TEAMtalk add that Tottenham and West Ham could also move for Phillips in January, with any exit likely to be an initial loan.

Manchester City should favour Juventus move ahead of sending Kalvin Phillips to Newcastle

In our view, a loan move to the Allianz Stadium makes more sense for Manchester City and Phillips.

Italian football is a lot slower than the Premier League, but very technical – it is why players such as Andrea Pirlo became icons of the sport in that country.

Therefore, Phillips – who is far from quick but boasts fantastic technical skills – could shine in Serie A.

If that happened, the Yorkshire Pirlo – as Leeds fans famously nicknamed him – would surely get his confidence back up and also secure a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for UEFA EURO 2024.

Manchester City can then revisit the situation this summer ahead of a potential permanent exit, where there could be more suitors for Phillips if he does well at Juventus.

The Citizens would also avoid strengthening a domestic rival in Newcastle if Juventus are given priority.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as anything could happen this winter.
