Newcastle are now ready to make a move to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City in January.

That is according to the Northern Echo.

So, what is the latest on Kalvin Phillips? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, Eddie Howe appears to be on red alert.

The Northern Echo believe Newcastle are ready to submit a bid for Phillips if the England international decides to depart Manchester City in January.

Many expect the 27-year-old to leave the Etihad Stadium this winter after Pep Guardiola continued to overlook him in recent weeks, despite Rodri picking up a suspension.

Since arriving in a £45m deal from Leeds back in July 2022, Phillips has only made two Premier League starts.

Now, Newcastle are ready to pounce on the £160,000-a-week man.

The Northern Echo claim that the Magpies will attempt to sign Phillips either on a permanent basis – or set up an initial loan deal – in January if the Manchester City No.4 makes it clear he wants to leave.

Howe is said to be keen on a new defensive midfielder, and tried to sign Declan Rice before the England international moved to Arsenal.

Kalvin Phillips should leave Manchester City

In our view, this is a fantastic opportunity for Phillips.

There is no shame in admitting that things simply haven’t worked out at Manchester City, where some of Europe’s best footballers have kept the Yorkshire-born playmaker sidelined.

Phillips could now get the chance to start regularly for Newcastle in the UEFA Champions League from January onwards – the Magpies look well placed to qualify from Group F – and become a key player under Howe.

The Northern Echo add that Newcastle want a new No.6 in order to play Bruno Guimaraes higher up the pitch, so game time should not be an issue for Phillips on Tyneside if a move does materialise.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as anything could happen.
