‘No debate’… John Obi Mikel suggests Man City have a player who’s even better than Haaland and De Bruyne

John Obi Mikel has said that Manchester City midfielder Rodri is the best player in the Premier League.

The Spaniard scored the winning goal in last season’s Champions League final which saw Pep Guardiola’s side beat Inter Milan 1-0 in Istanbul.

Having then gone on to be a regular figure in the team as the Manchester club look to regain the three titles they won last term, Rodri has now found himself on the end of some hefty praise from one former top-flight midfielder who knows what it takes to win titles.

Speaking in a recent video shared on Chris Wheatley’s YouTube channel, Obi Mikel had this to say when asked who he feels is the best midfielder in the Premier League right now.

He said: “Rodri. There’s no debate about it.

“What the guy does for Man City, I’ve been saying this for a long time but I think Pep has come out and also said publicly that he is the best player in the Premier League in his position. Not just in his position I also think he is the best player in the Premier League because of what he does for City, without him, City are not the same team.

“I mean the record speaks for itself, without him in the team they’ve lost half of their games. Every time he plays you can see what he brings to the team, the defensive duties he does, now he scores goals, he creates chances. What a fantastic player he is.

“The way we played that role, he took the playbook and ripped it into shreds, now it’s the Rodri position and it’s just amazing to see him express himself and be that amazing player he is.”

While the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland getting a lot of recognition because of the goals and assists they deliver for the team, it’s nice to see a former defensive-midfielder such as Obi Mikel highlighting why he thinks Rodri is the best player in the Premier League.

As the former Chelsea figure mentioned, City have lost three league games this season, all three of which Rodri was suspended for, highlighting how much of a miss he is when not available.

With that in mind, it’s safe to say that if the Citizens want to lift more silverware, they’ll need the 27-year-old to play in as many games as he can.
