Chelsea fans have now expressed their bewilderment at the appointment of Anthony Taylor ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Manchester City.
The 45-year-old has been chosen to oversee the meeting between Mauricio Pochettino and Pep Guardiola’s sides at Stamford Bridge.
So, why has this news baffled Chelsea fans ahead of the clash against Manchester City? Let’s take a look…
Chelsea fans puzzled as Anthony Taylor appointed for Manchester City clash
Well, some Chelsea fans are now feeling very pessimistic about getting a result against Manchester City.
That is because the west Londoners have not exactly enjoyed the best times when Taylor has officiated.
Over 160,000 Chelsea fans even signed a petition calling for the Manchester-born official to never referee one of the club’s fixtures again, after he was involved in a truly chaotic 2-2 draw between Tottenham and the Blues last season.
Harry Kane scored a late equaliser, with Taylor failing to notice that Cristian Romero had yanked Marc Cucurella’s hair in the buildup.
In fact, Chelsea fans were even able to list 12 specific incidents in which they felt Taylor had ruined one of their games – as shown by Football London.

Furthermore – in a bizarre turn of events – this Sunday’s clash between Chelsea and Manchester City will actually be Taylor’s first game back in the Premier League, after being demoted to the Championship following a mistake in the 2-2 draw between Wolves and Newcastle.
The man from Wythenshawe was then made to officiate Preston’s 3-2 win over Coventry on Saturday, in which he made another woeful penalty decision.
Therefore, some fans are not feeling very optimistic ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Manchester City, and are baffled that Taylor has been handed a massive fixture following his wobbly officiating of late.
One supporter wrote “no way” after hearing the news as they found themselves in pure disbelief.
Another echoed that by asking if the Premier League were “joking” around.
Two more Chelsea fans commented on the situation.
One said “you can’t write it” while another told the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) that they are “having a laugh” – they are quite clearly livid.
Last but not least, two more Chelsea fans commented on Taylor’s appointment.
One wrote “we are finished” as another admitted any hope they had of a result has now been “crushed” by the Premier League’s decision.
Hopefully, Taylor does not spoil Sunday’s clash, as it is set to be an entertaining encounter between two of the country’s biggest clubs.
