Manchester City have been one of the most successful teams in England and Europe over recent years.

Over the past seven years, City have won six Premier League trophies as well as three major European titles.

Now that Pep Guardiola’s side are on the hunt to win even more silverware, including a historic fifth consecutive top-flight title, a pundit and former Premier League star has shared some significant praise for one particular player from City’s squad who has been in the headlines recently.

Paul Merson heaps praise on Rodri following Man City injury blow

On the subject of Rodri potentially missing the remainder of the season with a knee injury he picked up against Arsenal last weekend, Paul Merson said this about the midfielder on Sky Sports News (24/9 7:05 PM).

He said: “Of all the top, top-drawers they have got, he is world-class.

“He gets into every other football team of world football. There are not many players in the world that can say that. He is one of them.

“He will be sorely missed. I love watching him play. He is an exceptional player. And he knits everything together.”

Rodri is one of the best players in the world

Since arriving at the Etihad Stadium from Atletico Madrid back in 2019, the Spaniard has made 260 appearances for City across all competitions.

In those games, Rodri has scored 26 goals, delivered 30 assists and won a plethora of trophies along the way.

After featuring in all but four of City’s league games last season where they became the first side to win four top-flight titles in a row, the 28-year-old then went on to help Spain win the 2024 European Championship.

As a result of these significant trophy victories for club and country, Rodri ended up being nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or alongside three other City players.

In fact, former Arsenal and Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas recently claimed that Rodri should win the Ballon d’Or over Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior.

Taking that into account, it’s easy to see why Merson is so full of admiration for the City star and why he thinks he’ll be a big miss for the Blues moving forward.
