Manchester City’s players have shown in recent years that they know what it takes to win trophies.

After winning the Treble in the 2022/23 season, Pep Guardiola’s side followed that up by winning two more European titles and becoming the first side to win four consecutive Premier League trophies.

With City having more players from their squad (14) take part in the recent 2024 European Championship than any other top-flight side, this highlights the amount of quality the Blues have.

Now that the tournament has come to an end, one pundit has shared his verdict on a City player who has played a key role for his club and country in recent weeks and months.

Paul Merson admits ‘world-class’ Rodri would get into any team in the world

When asked during a recent edition of Football’s Greatest who he feels the best player of the Euros was, Paul Merson had this to say in response.

He said: “I would have said Rodri. I don’t think Spain win the World Cup without Rodri. I don’t think they win it, but Rodri couldn’t play for us because we closed the game up too much.

“And then where he’s world-class, he’s world-class and people use world-class loosely.

“World-class means when you go, oh, he’s world-class, world-class means you get in every single football team in the world. That’s world-class.

“So every team in the world you would get into in your position, and Rodri does.”

Rodri should be a Ballon d’Or contender

After playing a prominent role in seeing City win their latest Premier League title, the midfielder went on to start all but one of Spain’s matches at the Euros.

In fact, after the final between Spain and England, Rodri was named the Player of the Tournament as a result of his performances throughout the competition.

Prior to the final, Athletic Bilbao defender Dani Vivian claimed that the City star should have won a Ballon d’Or by now, which we feel the chances of have now increased as a result of his continued efforts with City and winning the Euros with Spain.
