Paul Merson has revealed that Kevin De Bruyne reminds him of Dennis Bergkamp.
Recently, Jamie Carragher claimed that the Belgian midfielder is not just “better” than the Dutchman but also other Premier League legends like Eric Cantona and Gianfranco Zola.
Considering how Kevin De Bruyne has dominated English football since joining Manchester City, it is natural for several fans and pundits alike to compare him to stalwarts of yesteryear such as Dennis Bergkamp to name a few.
Paul Merson compares “phenomenal” Kevin De Bruyne to Dennis Bergkamp
In January, Jamie Carragher also went as far as to say that the 32-year-old has bettered the likes of David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany.
While Gary Lineker claimed that the treble-winner is more “versatile” than other legendary Premier League midfielders from the past like Roy Keane, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes and Patrick Vieira.
Paul Merson has now likened Manchester City maestro Kevin De Bruyne to Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp.
“I’m going with Kevin De Bruyne at number five [in the list of the greatest-ever Premier League exports]. I know he came over at the start with Chelsea and it didn’t work out. I thought he struggled at Chelsea”, he said on Football’s Greatest with Jeff Stelling.
“But since then when he’s come back to Man City, he’s been absolutely phenomenal. I used to think I had a good brain, I was an intelligent footballer, I could see a pass. I watch him and I watch the telly and I go, ‘Wow! How did you see that pass? How did you just see that pass?’ He reminds me of Dennis Bergkamp where when you’re on the pitch, you’re in the middle of it, it’s a 100 miles an hour.”
Paul Merson broke down how Kevin De Bruyne and Dennis Bergkamp see passes like not many players can.
“Him, Dennis Bergkamp, you feel like they’re playing in a helicopter hovering above everybody else. They see the picture, they see everything, couldn’t talk highly enough of him. I think he is the go-to man at Man City. For all the top players they’ve got, he’s the main man in my opinion.”

Not only is Kevin De Bruyne similar to Dennis Bergkamp, as Paul Merson claimed but, in our view, he is a superior player.
There is no getting away from the fact that the former Inter Milan attacker was a genius.
But the same can be said about Kevin De Bruyne, whose technical excellence is also backed up by the fact that he is one of the most productive midfielders the game has ever seen.
As a creator, a player who can run games from start to finish, in terms of the variety of roles he has played for City and even defensively, De Bruyne simply trumps Bergkamp at this point.
