Pep Guardiola has addressed the situation surrounding his goalkeepers ahead of the final week of the summer transfer window.

Manchester City endured a tough day at the office on Saturday as Guardiola’s men were beaten 2-0 by Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium, and unfortunately for James Trafford, the goalkeeper made a big error that led to Spurs’ second goal.

Despite Trafford impressing against Wolves during the opening weekend of the Premier League season, this has led to Man City fans questioning if the 22-year-old is ready to be the Manchester club’s number one goalkeeper.

There has been a lot of transfer talk around Ederson moving to Galatasaray over the last two weeks, and following City’s defeat to Tottenham, Guardiola has addressed the goalkeeper situation at Man City ahead of the final week of the summer window.

Pep Guardiola cannot confirm that James Trafford is his number one for the season

Trafford has all the ability to be Man City’s long-term number one goalkeeper, but the 22-year-old may need some time to learn under Ederson, which is a key reason why Guardiola should avoid letting the Brazilian go during the current transfer window.

Speaking at his press conference after Man City’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham, Guardiola was asked about the goalkeeper situation in his squad, with the legendary coach stating that he only selected Trafford for the game against Spurs and failed to mention if the Englishman is his number one for the 2025/26 season.

“James [Trafford] made a good first game, and we decided [for him to] continue,” Guardiola told the media.

“When I take the decisions normally in the first part of the season, not just for the keeper, the keeper is a special position, of course, to have more consistency in the goal.

“For all the players, when you play one or two games, everybody thinks: ‘This is the starting lineup, this player is going to play.’

“I learn from many years that with this amount of games, everyone will play and be important. It’s just today I decide that [Trafford to start].”

Guardiola would also comment on the final week of the transfer window, which is important for the goalkeeper situation at the Etihad Stadium, as Man City continue to be linked to Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Pep Guardiola on potential Man City signings

Man City could be busy during the final week of the transfer window, but that depends on the futures of Savinho and Ederson.

When asked about potential incomings on TNT Sports after City’s defeat to Tottenham, Guardiola stated that the Manchester club will talk to players and agents.

“We will see. We have a long week, with the club we’ll talk, with the players and agents, and we’ll see,” the Man City boss said.

There is a high chance that there will be some movement at the Etihad Stadium, with Ederson the more likely of the two players to leave, as Man City have blocked Savinho’s exit.

That would see Donnarumma arrive at the Premier League giants, which is a name that will certainly excite fans of the Manchester club.
