Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson will be unavailable for tomorrow’s FA Cup clash against Newcastle United.

The Brazilian was forced off the pitch with a thigh injury during last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool in the Premier League at Anfield.

With the Citizens now preparing for their next game against the Magpies in the quarter-final of the FA Cup, the City boss has shared an update regarding the shot-stopper’s availability.

Speaking in his latest press conference ahead of tomorrow’s clash against the Toon, Guardiola had this to say about Ederson and his recovery.

He said: “Eddie is getting better, hopefully he’ll be ready after the international break. Tomorrow for sure [he is out]. He’ll have two weeks off then, he’ll recover, we’ll see how he feels. Hopefully as soon as possible.”

This season has seen the 30-year-old feature in 36 games for City across all competitions, showing that he is their first-choice goalkeeper.

Bearing in mind how Stefan Ortega, who replaced Ederson at Anfield, usually plays in FA Cup games, this and the fact that an international break is around the corner says to us that it is an ideal time for Ederson to be out injured seeing as he won’t be missing too much action.

However, everyone at City, as Guardiola said, will undoubtedly be hoping that the Brazil international can make a full recovery as soon as possible and avoid any more injuries for the remainder of the season.

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s match against Eddie Howe’s side, the fact that Ortega has saved seven of the nine shots on target he’s faced across City’s three FA Cup games this season says that he has what it takes to be a safe pair of hands in Ederson’s absence.
