Pep Guardiola discusses whether Man City could sign a Rodri replacement in January

Manchester City have shown how capable they are when it comes to signing players during previous transfer windows.

However, City tend to bring new players in during the summer transfer periods rather than in January windows.

In their latest season under Pep Guardiola, the Blues have won four and drawn one of their five Premier League games as well as avoiding defeats in the Champions League against Inter Milan and in the Carabao Cup against Watford.

Despite their decent results, the champions have had to deal with some big injury issues to some of their big-name players.

Their most recent injury problem involves Rodri, who will now be sidelined for the remainder of the season after damaging his knee against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium.

Now though, the City manager has addressed whether or not his side could turn to the transfer market to help them deal with the injured midfielder’s absence.

Pep Guardiola addresses potential January transfer swoop for Rodri replacement

Speaking in his recent press conference (via Sam Lee) ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match against Newcastle United, Guardiola said this when asked if City could look to bring in a new midfielder to replace Rodri during the upcoming January transfer window.

He said: “We will see. We talked today with Txiki, we will see what’s going on. We don’t have to decide tomorrow, right? We have time to see the potential problems we will have and after we will see.”

City should use the January window as a last resort

The previous window saw City land a free transfer for Ilkay Gundogan, who is one of the midfield options Guardiola currently has in his squad.

In addition to Gundogan, the likes of Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes could also be used to fill the void left by Rodri, who made 50 appearances for City last season.

Also, Danny Murphy recently claimed that Guardiola could use John Stones, Manuel Akanji and Rico Lewis in the absence of Rodri.

In terms of potentially signing a new midfielder in January, this shouldn’t be at the top of the agenda unless Guardiola isn’t able to find a suitable way for his current options to do a job for the team.
