Manchester City manager Scott Carson has hailed Scott Carson’s influence at the club, suggesting the 35-year-old is like a captain.
City are after negotiating a new contract for the stopper which would keep him at the club for the next 18 months.
As things currently stand, Carson will remain with City until the end of 2020/21, when he will then return to parent club Derby County.
There have been talks with the Championship side about the possibility of cancelling his deal with them, so he’d become free to negotiate with City directly.
Speaking about the veteran before the Aston Villa game, Guardiola heaped praise on the star, despite him never featuring for the club’s first-team.
He said (Sky Sports): “One keeper who is so important for us is Scott Carson.
“He’s like our captain behind the scenes. Like Fernandinho. He’s not noticed by the (news)papers.
“He’s not noticed on the field, because he’s the third keeper, but in the locker room he’s like another captain, and he’s so important and hopefully he can stay longer with us in next year.”
Carson must get permanent City deal
Guardiola’s words show how important Carson actually is.
He may have never played for the first-team, and there’s a chance he could never, but it’s vital to have leadership in the dressing room.
Clearly the manager is very taken by £25,000-a-week star Carson (Spotrac), who obviously has a huge amount of experience under his belt and plenty to offer behind the scenes.
