Pep Guardiola has now shared whether Manchester City will replace Kalvin Phillips or not.

The 53-year-old made the comments when speaking in his press conference ahead of Friday’s FA Cup clash against Tottenham.

So, what did Pep Guardiola say about the chances of Manchester City replacing Kalvin Phillips? Let’s take a look…

What Guardiola said about Phillips

Well, the Spaniard confirmed that the England international travelled to London for a medical with West Ham, but said it is unlikely that Txiki Begiristain will sign a replacement for the Yorkshireman.

When asked if Manchester City will replace Phillips, Guardiola simply replied: “I don’t think we will replace Kalvin.”

In truth, there is not much need for the Citizens to replace the 28-year-old, with all due respect.

Phillips has played just 89 minutes of Premier League football so far this season across four substitute appearances, as Guardiola often uses the likes of Rico Lewis and Mateo Kovacic instead of him next to Rodri.

He has only made two starts – one coming in a dead rubber UEFA Champions League affair against Red Star Belgrade, and another in the Carabao Cup loss to Newcastle.

Therefore, the dynamic of Manchester City’s squad does not really change even with the Leeds-born midfielder heading to West Ham.

Alan Varela move now unlikely for Manchester City

Unless Guardiola is keeping his cards close to his chest, these comments suggest a move to sign Alan Varela from Porto will not happen – not this month, at least.

A story from Bolavip claimed that Manchester City were eyeing the Argentine as a replacement for Phillips, with Liverpool also keen on signing the South American.

Now – however – Guardiola’s comments suggest no such move will be taking place this month, barring any late U-turn from the Spaniard.

Nevertheless, be sure to keep an eye on developments at Manchester City, as anything could happen in the final week of the January transfer window.
