Journalist and pundit Julien Laurens has backed Matheus Nunes to become a special player at Manchester City.

After it was reported that the Manchester club had agreed a £53m deal for the 25-year-old from Wolves, he has now been officially unveiled as a new City player, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal.

Prior to this official announcement, one pundit shared his thoughts on this move and what Pep Guardiola could do with the midfielder.

Speaking in a recent video on the ESPN FC YouTube channel, Laurens had this to say about the midfielder and what he could do at City.

He said: “I like Matheus Nunes a lot, I think he has a lot of talent and I think he is a bit special and I think Pep is going to make him special like a [Manuel] Akanji that people thought ‘oh really, that’s a weird signing,’ look at what happened, even [Nathan] Ake, those kind of guys.”

Back in February 2022, Guardiola said that, after seeing Nunes play against City in a Champions League game for Sporting CP, the Portuguese international is one of the best players in the world, which makes it easy to see why the Citizens have now added him to their squad.

Across his debut season at Wolves, Nunes ended up playing in 34 of their 38 Premier League games, featuring in every midfield position possible, showcasing his versatility and what he’ll be able to offer the European champions.

However, having only been able to score one goal and deliver one assist across those 34 league appearances, this is an area the City manager will want him to become more proficient in.

With Guardiola having a reputation of being able to improve the players he coaches, it’ll be interesting to see how the former Wolves star fares at the Etihad Stadium and what sort of role he’ll have in the team.
