‘Pep must have said to him’: Jermain Defoe says ‘dynamic’ Man City ace is a game-changer

Jermain Defoe has shared how impressed he has been with Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku so far this season.

The winger’s previous Premier League outing saw him provide the assist for City’s opening goal in their 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

With the Belgian now in with a chance of appearing in his first Manchester derby tomorrow, one pundit and former Premier League player has shared his thoughts on the City star and what sort of coaching he’s had from Pep Guardiola.

Speaking in a recent edition of Team Talks by Premier League Productions (via Optus Sport), Defoe had this to say about Doku

He said: “I do feel like in certain games where it may get tight and you need that little bit of brilliance, someone that can get it and just create something out of nothing and I definitely think he’s that player.

“He’s so dynamic and direct. Every time he gets the ball he’s never looking to go back, Pep must have said to him ‘every time you get the ball just play to your strength and go at the full-back,’ and he does that. He scores goals, he creates assists but he’s definitely someone I like.”

With 10 games under his belt for the Citizens across all competitions, the winger has scored two goals and delivered two assists.

Having featured in just six Premier League games, Doku has racked up more progressive carries (49), carries into the penalty area (28) and successful take-ons (20) than any other City player.

This backs up Defoe’s observation about the Belgian being dynamic and direct on the pitch.

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s match against Manchester United, the fact that the Red Devils have the third-highest number of successful take-ons used against them in the league this season (96), suggests that Doku could be a real struggle for United to deal with.
