Journalist Toby Cudworth has named Ederson as being one of the most important signings made by Pep Guardiola during his time at Manchester City.
Recent days have seen Manchester United linked with a move for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana as a result of the uncertainty surrounding the future of David De Gea.
This proposed move for Onana has since led to one journalist sharing his thoughts on how signing the right goalkeeper could be very significant for a team looking to change things up and evolve.
Journalist highlights importance of Ederson transfer
Speaking on a recent edition of the Talking Transfers podcast, Cudworth said this about City’s move for Ederson and how important it has been for the club.
He said: “Man City have won five of the last six Premier League titles and we know that they’ve got an unbelievable squad and they’ve spent loads of money on the best players in the world to achieve that, but arguably, one of their most important signings in that time was Ederson because they recognised the need for a goalkeeper who could not only stop the ball but also play the ball short.
“Ederson’s also got a cannon of a long kick on him, tremendously accurate and it’s one of the things Pep wanted to address, he did it when he brought Claudio Bravo in the year before.”
Since joining the Manchester club from Benfica back in 2017 in a deal worth a reported fee of £35m, the Brazilian has made 289 appearances across all competitions, keeping 139 clean sheets in the process.
Labelled as an “extraordinary” player by Guardiola, the 29-year-old showcased his importance to the team in their previous and arguably most important game against Inter Milan in the Champions League final last month as he made five saves to help his side keep a clean sheet and win the trophy.
In fact, the City shot-stopper ended the previous Champions League campaign with the highest save percentage (90.3%) out of any player that featured in the tournament on more than three occasions.
This further highlights how much of a key player he is for the treble winners and why Cudworth felt the need to highlight him in comparison to how important Onana could be for United if he joins the Red Devils this summer.
